Yoann Gourcuff should have done more for Lyon - Maxime Gonalons

Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons has said he believes Yoann Gourcuff "should have contributed much more."

Gourcuff, 28, has been sidelined by a series of injury problems since his move to the club from Bordeaux 2010.

The France international midfielder, out of contract next summer, has played 85 league games in four-and-a-half seasons and has made just five starts for the Ligue 1 leaders this term.

Gonalons told France Football that Gourcuff -- who was tipped to be the new Zinedine Zidane by some pundits when he arrived at OL -- was "an incredible player, capable of doing incredible things."

But he added: "This need to be at 100 percent to play is difficult to understand for the whole of the team, the club. He could have, and should have, contributed much more."

Gonalons, who signed a contract extension until 2018 earlier this season, had attracted interest from Napoli last year.

He confirmed that the Serie A club, who had a 17 million euro bid rejected by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas last January, had also made a summer approach and said Atletico Madrid had also looked at him.

"Last summer, when talks were more than hot with Napoli, I only had to say whether I would join them or not," he explained.

"[Napoli coach Rafael] Benitez called me, told me he wanted me, but it wasn't the club that suited me best. There were two or three tentative things with Atletico Madrid, but it didn't go any further."
