Levante captain Juanfran to retire at end of season

Levante captain Juanfran has announced his retirement following his side's relegation from the Primera Division.

Les Granotes' six-year stay in Spain's top flight came to an end after Monday's 3-1 defeat to Malaga.

Levante have two games remaining this season, against Atletico Madrid and Real Vallecano, with Juanfran expected to feature.

The 39-year-old, who began his career at the club before returning to Estadio Ciudad de Valencia in 2010, said: "These are not easy situations when one is not going to play any more."

Speaking to Marca, he added: "I've been six years with Levante. For me it has been a success, but the truth of football is in the present."

In between his two stints with Levante, Juanfran also had spells with Valencia, Celta Vigo, Besiktas, Ajax, Real Zaragoza and AEK Athens.

He featured in the 2002 World Cup with Spain and racked up 11 appearances for his country.
