Lyon's Depay urges fans to 'get facts straight' and claims quotes taken out of context

Memphis Depay has urged Lyon fans to get their "facts straight" and claimed quotes that he wanted to join a team "that really wants to play football" had been taken out of context.

Former Manchester United player Depay was quoted by Helden magazine as saying he wanted "to go to a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG or Bayern Munich" in the summer.

The magazine also quoted him as saying he wanted "to go to a city that suits me and to a team that really wants to play football."

But in a tweet that pictured him walking in Lyon, France's second city, the 24-year-old told fans he had in fact praised Lyon in the interview.

"I really like Lyon and people see me in the streets all the time! I also mentioned that @OL play better football then most of the clubs with big names!" he wrote.

"So before you try to call me names or attack me, make sure you get your facts straight instead of running with the rumours."

Depay signed a four-and-a-half year deal at Lyon after leaving Old Trafford, and has scored five times in 22 top-flight appearances this season.

His goals have helped Lyon to third place in Ligue 1 ahead of their Champions League clash with Barcelona next month.
