Pep Guardiola: Man City will assess Patrick Roberts' role for next season

MANCHESTER, England -- Pep Guardiola will make a decision about Patrick Roberts' future at the end of the season after his goal helped Celtic to a 1-1 draw against parent club Manchester City.

The England under-20 international, who is in the middle of an 18-month loan spell from City, gave the Scottish champions a fourth-minute lead at the Etihad with an excellent individual strike.

Kelechi Iheanacho equalised four minutes later before Roberts could have been awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time when he was tugged back on the edge of the box by defender Gael Clichy.

Guardiola says he knows all about the quality of Roberts, who cost £5 million plus add-ons from Fulham, but will not make a decision based on one game.

"He scored a good goal," he told a news conference. "We are going to talk about it at the end of the season.

"We know his quality but the decision is not about one game. It is for one season for the perspective.

"We are going to speak with him, the managers, between each other we are going to decide. He has good quality with the winger, one against one.

"He worked defensively. He has, of course, potential. I am so happy with his performance, of course."

City were already assured of a second-placed finish in Group C and Guardiola took the opportunity to rest many of his first-team players and bring in youngsters Tosin Adarabioyo and Pablo Maffeo.

"We played really good against a good team," Guardiola added. "The experienced players like Bacary and Gael, Pablo, Fernando, Gundogan helped a lot for the young players.

"It was a good experience for them. They deserved to play because they train good. Their behaviour is always perfect so I am so happy to give them the opportunity to play in the Champions League.

"The game was good for the spectators, both teams tried to attack. It was good. It was fun. It was a pleasure to play against Celtic."

Guardiola will now await the draw for the knockout stages on Monday and he will avoid former clubs Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as French champions Paris Saint-Germain, who surprisingly finished second in Group A.

"Considering Manchester City in their whole history just once arrived in the semifinal, just four times in a row the eighth finals, we are so happy," Guardiola added.

"We are there, so we compete with the best team in the world, against Monchengladbach, an amazing team, and Celtic are a team who every weekend win games.

"The group was really tough and we did it one game before. Our performances at home were really good. It is always more complicated, the Champions League is not easy, especially for the teams who have to experience in Europe. We cannot forget that.

"We have to win the respect during our performances and through the next years. We are there in the draw on Monday. We are going to see the draw and see how is our level in February. Hopefully it will be good to compete against the best teams in Europe."
