Pair of Clasicos headline Liga MX Clausura quarterfinal matchups

The quarterfinals of the 2017 Clausura are set following the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday, with two local derbies highlighting the quarterfinal matchups.

No. 2 Monterrey will play reigning champion Tigres in the Clasico Regio, third-seed Chivas face Guadalajara rival Atlas in the Clasico Tapatio, while top seed Tijuana hosts Morelia and fourth-placed Toluca plays Santos Laguna in the other games.

The first-leg matches will be played out on Wednesday and Thursday, with the return games on Saturday and Sunday. Starting times for the games will be announced on Monday.

Morelia and Tigres were the big winners from the weekend matches, with both securing the last two playoff spots.

Morelia defeated Monterrey 2-1 on Saturday through a 91st minute goal from Raul Ruidiaz to condemn Chiapas to relegation and claim the final playoff berth from Club America.

Tigres had claimed their spot in the postseason earlier Saturday with a 5-1 thrashing of Queretaro, with French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac netting three goals.

In other news following the weekend games, Ricardo La Volpe is no longer coach of Club America, with the Argentine announcing his departure the day after Las Aguilas failed to reach the 2017 Clausura playoffs.
