Barcelona have confirmed that Ibrahim Afellay is facing four months out of action after undergoing surgery on his right thigh.
Afellay, 27, has not played since last November after picking up a hamstring problem while on international duty with Netherlands.
He then suffered a thigh problem on a winter training camp with Schalke, where he was on loan, and was ruled out for the remainder of last season.
The Dutch midfielder has failed to shake off the injury and will now face further time out after having an operation in a bid to cure the problem.
"Ibrahim Afellay underwent surgery this Thursday to correct the chronic tendino-muscular injury in his right thigh," Barcelona confirmed on their official website.
"Doctors Antoni Dalmau and Ricard Pruna conducted the surgery at Barcelona Hospital. The player will be out of action for approximately four months."
Afellay has endured a nightmare few years since joining Barca from PSV in 2011 -- he was also sidelined for six months in his first season at Camp Nou after tearing knee ligaments.
