Michel Bastos is set to sign for Roma on Monday after they managed to hijack Napoli’s move for him.
The former Schalke and Lyon wide man, who is currently under contract with Abu Dhabi club Al-Ain, was due to travel to Naples to sign a deal to play for Rafa Benitez’s side.
However, Roma made a late bid for his services on Saturday, and he arrived in the Italian capital on Sunday to complete a move.
Bastos, 30, will link up with his former coach at Lille, Rudi Garcia, once he has passed a medical on Monday morning.
"I had asked for a wide attacking player and he can fill several roles, on the left and on the right," Garcia said after his side's 3-0 win over Livorno on Saturday. "He has excellent technique and a very strong shot, and he can also play as left full-back, which means we will have cover for every position.
"I've been following him since he left Lille. He played for Lyon and Schalke and I've always had my eye on him and thought he could be an option for us. He really wanted to come back to Europe. He's not only a great quality player, but also a great guy."
Bastos’ signing will be the second time Roma have beaten Napoli to a transfer target this month, having taken Radja Nainggolan from Cagliari ahead of the Partenopei, who did at least complete the transfer of Jorginho from Hellas Verona at the weekend.
