Lazio captain Stefano Mauri has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

Mauri, whose previous deal was due to expire next month, had been linked with a move away from the Rome-based outfit this summer.

However, the Biancocelesti confirmed on Friday that the 34-year-old is now set to remain at the club until the end of next season.

An official Lazio statement read: "Lazio announces it has renewed the contract of captain Stefano Mauri for the duration of one year."

The midfielder, who will remain at Lazio for a ninth straight season, could not hide his delight at the news.

"Still together,'' Mauri wrote on his Facebook account. "I am proud to represent the Biancoceleste colours, I'm proud to be the captain of this team.

"Always Forza Lazio."

Mauri sat out part of the 2013-14 campaign after being handed a six-month ban for his involvement in an attempt to fix two matches at the end of the 2010-11 season.

He returned from the suspension in January, however, and scored four goals in 12 league appearances for Lazio, who finished ninth in the final Serie A standings.
