Ubong Friday wins NPFL VAT wonder goal

Akwa United forward Ubong Friday has been voted as the winner of the NPFL VAT wonder goal for match day 21.

The award which is in its second week since it was re-launched at the start of the second round, was won by the exciting wide man who beat off stiff competition from challengers Godwin Obaje of FC Ifeanyi Ubah FC and Wilfred Ammeh of Niger Tornadoes.

Ubong was the unanimous choice by voters on www.npfl.ng amassing 81.1 percent of total votes cast, while Obaje had 12.4 percent and Ammeh finished at the rear with 6.5 percent.

The winning goal was a real beauty to behold against ABS FC in Uyo.

Ubong received the ball from the left side with the away team retreating in defence; he unleashed a long range shot to perfection, which dipped into the back of the net leaving the goalkeeper helpless and embarrassed.

Ubong will be handed N150,000 cash prize for emerging the winner, half of which will go to a charity organisation of his choice within Uyo, the city where his club is based.

Considering the growing popularity of the wonder goal series, it is expected that more eye-catching goals will be recorded in the games and weeks to come in the Nigeria Professional Football League, players encouraged by the possibility of getting nominated for the FIFA Puskas award for truly outstanding strikes.
