Paris Saint-Germain hit Marco Verratti with drink-driving fine

Paris Saint-Germain have taken action against midfielder Marco Verratti after he was caught drink-driving earlier this week.

In a statement on Friday, PSG said the Italy international had been found to be over the limit in a roadside check and had informed and apologised to the club.

"On the night of Oct. 30-31, Marco Verratti was subject to a roadside check in his car," the statement said.

"It showed a blood alcohol content higher than the limit allowed for drivers on probation after recently obtaining their driving licence.

"The following day, our player spontaneously apologised to the coach and the PSG management.

"Following the rules that apply to all of our players as part of their contracts, Marco Verratti will be deprived of a portion of his monthly ethical bonus, which rewards players for the exemplary behaviour expected of them in all circumstances as PSG representatives."

L'Equipe reported that Verratti had been caught driving with a blood alcohol level greater than two times the French limit and said the 25-year-old had been put in a cell to sober up. He faces a lengthy ban from driving.
