Ex-Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Doll takes charge of Indonesia's Persija Jakarta

Fallen Indonesian giants Persija Jakarta have turned to former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Doll as the man to lead their revival, after announcing his appointment on a three-year contract on Saturday.

Persija -- one of Indonesia's biggest clubs -- have struggled to live up to expectations since they last won the Liga 1 title in 2018, finishing 10th and 8th in the two seasons since.

Having parted ways with Italian Angelo Alessio in January, it will now be down to Doll to guide Persija back to the summit of Indonesian football.

"I am honoured to be able to join one of the big teams in Indonesia," said Doll, on the club's official website.

"Of course, I really want to be able to take Persija to a higher level. I can't wait to lead the quest in Jakarta."

Doll had a full season in charge of Dortmund but resigned after a 13th-place finish in the 2007-08 Bundesliga campaign, and also had spells at the helm of fellow German teams Hamburg and Hannover.

Doll's managerial career has also taken him to Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Hungary, while his last job was with Cypriot outfit APOEL.
