Portland's Fanendo Adi to miss Vancouver match due to suspension

Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi will miss Saturday's match against the Vancouver Whitecaps after being suspended for one game by Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee, the league announced on Wednesday night.

The ban stems from an incident that occurred during the first half of SKC's 1-0 win on April 15. Video replays appeared to show Adi swinging his arm at Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara in the 26th minute of the contest.

The play was missed by match officials, but after reviewing the episode the committee decided retroactive punishment for violent conduct was in order. Adi was also issued an undisclosed fine.

Losing the 26-year-old Nigerian against their Cascadia rivals will hurt the Timbers, who remain atop the Western Conference despite last week's loss.

With five goals in seven games this season, the 6-foot-4 forward is tied for second among all MLS scorers, trailing Golden Boot leader Erick Torres of the Houston Dynamo by one strike.
