MADRID -- Real Sociedad midfielder Sergio Canales tore ligaments in his left knee during their 3-1 loss at Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Canales had already torn ligaments in his right knee on two separate occasions. He required surgery both times.
He went down while running just before half-time, and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

The club said the diagnosis of his injury is "compatible" with a ligament tear in his left knee.
The 24-year-old Canales played for Racing Santander, Real Madrid, and Valencia before joining Sociedad midway through the 2013-14 season.
