David Carney wraps up win for Sydney FC over Melbourne Victory

Sydney FC recorded another A-League comeback win over Melbourne Victory, with Bobo's double inflicting more pain on Kevin Muscat's side.

The Sky Blues stretched their two-year unbeaten streak over Victory with a 3-1 win, earned despite Besart Berisha's penalty opener.

With Jason Geria dismissed, David Carney put the icing on the cake against 10-man Victory by running onto Bobo's through-ball and finishing past a stranded Lawrence Thomas.

The result belied a tight and physical match between the country's biggest teams.

And it might have gone the other way, if, with the match still scoreless, Adrian Mierzejewski had been sent off for elbowing Rhys Williams' head in an aerial contest.

But in an all-too familiar refrain for A-League opponents, Graham Arnold's side found a way to win.

The result is the fifth time in seven unbeaten matches since the 2016 Australia Day clash that Sydney have come from behind to deny Victory a win.

The most famous of those occasions was last year's grand final, and on Friday night, Victory started with the same electricity.

Muscat's side ran on top of the Sky Blues and managed the first five shots of the game.

Top chances fell to Jai Ingham -- who was preferred to Christian Theoharous in the absence of Leroy George -- and Berisha, but neither could find the back of the net.

After the quarter-hour mark, Sydney took over.

Mierzejewski, who was riled up after a tussle with Geria, unleashed a vicious volley from inside the box that Thomas saved to his right.

Thomas became Victory's busiest player as the Sky Blues held sway -- watching anxiously as Berisha's mis-timed clearance from a cross pinged just wide of his post.

After the break, the 21,037-strong crowd were on their feet when Josh Brillante clumsily brought down Ingham in the box. Up stepped Berisha, and despite a dubious penalty record, he calmly put Victory ahead.

Victory's lead lasted less than two minutes, when Luke Wilkshire's looping cross was nodded in by Bobo.

It was then too easy for Sydney, who laid assault to Victory's goal.

Geria's lunge at the Brazilian left Jarred Gillett no choice but to dismiss the full-back for a second yellow, and award Sydney a penalty on 77 minutes.

Bobo scored his 18th goal of the season, before playing in Carney six minutes later to extend the Sky Blues' lead at the top of the league to nine points over second-placed Newcastle.
