VfL Wolfsburg got off to a great start in their bid to stay in the Bundesliga, beating second-tier Holstein Kiel 3-1 on Thursday in the first leg of their promotion-relegation playoff at the Volkswagen Arena.

The hosts took an early lead through Divock Origi in the 13th minute before the 2.Bundesliga side levelled with a Kingsley Schindler goal after the half-hour.

But Josip Brekalo had Wolfsburg back in the lead before half-time and Yunus Malli added his team's third in the second half to help Bruno Labbadia's side see out the result.

The two teams will meet again in Kiel for the second leg on Monday.
