Barnsley boost play-off hopes with victory at Fleetwood

A second-half own goal from Joe Davis and a late header from substitute Josh Scowen sealed a 2-0 win for Sky Bet League One play-off hopefuls Barnsley at relegation-threatened Fleetwood.Scottish midfielder Thomas Grant, making only his second start in Fleetwood colours, had two golden opportunities to break the deadlock in the first 10 minutes, but Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies had the better of him on both occasions. The Cod Army edged the first half, and had strong claims for a penalty waved away by referee Kevin Wright when Shola Ameobi was dragged to the floor by Callum Connolly as he approached to head the ball. However, within two minutes of the restart, the visitors went ahead and it was a moment to forget for Fleetwood's young centre-back Davis.A hopeful punt into the Fleetwood half was not dealt with and under severe pressure from Sam Winnall, Davis miscommunicated with Chris Maxwell and headed over the goalkeeper and into an empty goal.Davis nearly made immediate amends for his error, reacting first to Jimmy Ryan's free-kick from the left, only for Davies to push away to safety. The Tykes rounded the game off with eight minutes remaining, as substitute Scowen headed Adam Hamill's corner home at the front post to seal an important three points for the Yorkshire side.
