Anthony Modeste hat trick helps Cologne rout Hamburg

Anthony Modeste responded to missing a penalty by netting a second-half hat trick as Cologne moved up to fourth with a 3-0 victory over bottom-placed Hamburg.

Modeste, the Bundesliga's leading scorer this season, was gifted the chance to score his ninth goal of the campaign when Ashton Gotz brought down Yuya Osako inside the penalty area five minutes before the interval.

However, the French forward sent the spot-kick against the post, letting a Hamburg side who set a new club record for consecutive minutes without a goal - over 600 - off the hook.

Modeste made amends with a 25-minute hat-trick after the break, though.

He opened the scoring in the 61st minute after deflecting in Simon Zoller's shot, a goal that arrived soon after Hamburg had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Bobby Wood.

Wood was sent off before the hour-mark for elbowing Cologne defender Dominique Heintz in the stomach after some shoving between the two while waiting for a free kick. Referee Benjamin Brand didn't see the incident but showed Wood the red card after consulting with his linesman.

Modeste increased Cologne's lead with a near-post header in the 83rd minute before adding his third just a few minutes later, sealing Cologne's win and taking his Bundesliga tally to 11 for the season.
