Tiago Volpi shines as Queretaro wins Copa MX on penalties

Queretaro goalkeeper Tiago Volpi was the hero as Gallos Blancos overcame Chivas Guadalajara on penalties Wednesday to lift the Copa MX in Estadio Corregidora.

The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes and 3-2 on penalties, with Brazilian Volpi saving two Chivas penalties in the shootout and Alan Pulido hitting the post with the final effort.

The victory handed Queretaro its first major trophy and increased manager Victor Manuel Vucetich's record to 14 wins from 16 finals managed.

Volpi had kept the score-sheet blank with a man-of-the-match performance during a game in which he made five key saves.

Volpi's first came in the 21st minute when the Brazilian tipped a Carlos "Gullit" Pena shot over the cross-bar and there were two other flying saves before he clawed back an Oswaldo Alanis header on the hour mark in the best stop of the night.

Chivas had the better of the game, with Queretaro attempting to do damage at pace on the counter-attack, but the home team's job became even more tricky when Colombian forward Andres Renteria was sent off for appearing to head-butt Chivas defender Miguel Ponce in the 71st minute.

Chivas are in fourth position in the Liga MX and almost guaranteed a playoff spot, while Queretaro is down in 14th and out of Liguilla contention.
