The New York Red Bulls needed last-minute heroics from Bradley Wright-Phillips to see off the New England Revolution in a 1-0 U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal win at Jordan Field on Thursday night. With the game scoreless near the end of regular time, Wright-Phillips collected a Felipe through ball and bundled home from six yards out with a New England defender trying to bring him down to send the Red Bulls through to the semifinals. Early on, Daniel Royer went close from a Sacha Kljestan corner kick in the 11th minute and Chris Tierney skied his shot from outside the penalty area over the bar seconds later. Felipe fired a well-hit line drive on target in the 29th minute, but Revs goalkeeper Brad Knighton easily handled it in the New England goal. The stalemate was nearly broken just before half-time when Bradley Wright-Phillips got loose in the Revs penalty area only to see his goal-bound rocket parried away at the last second by Knighton. Both teams' frustrations continued throughout the first 20 minutes of the second half. Royer had the best chance for New York -- a volley from 18 yards away -- but missed left of the goal and Kei Kamara wasted an excellent opportunity for New England with a close-range shot going right to Ryan Meara. Kamara then botched another chance, heading over from right in front of goal from a deft Lee Nguyen chip. New England were forced to play with 10 men from the 75th minute on after Benjamin Angoua kicked out at Wright-Phillips following a foul and was shown straight red from the referee. And the extra player wound up paying off for the visitors when Wright-Phillips slotted home in the 88th minute to give his team the win.
