England ease to victory over United States on Wayne Rooney's farewell

England eased to a 3-0 victory over United States at Wembley with goals from Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Callum Wilson.

Wayne Rooney played 33 minutes on his England farewell but failed to get on the scoresheet as two experimental teams went head to head.

England were fast out of the blocks fast and had United States on the back foot. Brad Guzan superbly tipped Dele Alli's header onto the bar, but Alexander-Arnold's corner had bent out of play and the goal would not have stood.

Moments later Wilson should have bagged a debut goal after Guzan had given the ball away. Lingard delivered from the right but the unmarked Bournemouth striker failed to connect properly and the chance was gone.

Wilson then thought he should have had a penalty when Guzan rushed out to meet him, but the referee Jesus Gil Manzano waved away the appeals.

Lingard shot powerfully at Guzan as England continued to dominate.

For all that play, United States should have taken the lead in the 24th minute. Christian Pulisic got lucky with a break of the ball as the England centre-backs fell asleep, but the Borussia Dortmund star was thwarted by Jordan Pickford when through on goal.

Seconds later, and England were in front. Ben Chilwell found Alli on the left, who in turn fed Lingard on the edge of the box who picked out the top corner with a fine, curling right-footed effort.

Almost from the restart England scored a second as Jadon Sancho rolled in Alexander-Arnold to score his first senior international goal with a superb, low effort into the opposite corner.

United States almost got a route back into the game but once again Julian Green fired straight at Pickford from outside the area.

Wilson then made a fine run to control Alli's pass on his chest, but he scuffed his shot to Guzan.

Rooney was introduced from the bench in the 57th minute for his 120th and final cap, and was given a rapturous reception from the Wembley crowd.

The second half was largely a non-event until the 66th minute when Wood headed over from close range after England had switched off on a short corner.

Rooney had a shot on target in the 71st minute when he worked space on the edge of the box, but it was an easy take for Guzan.

Wilson then almost got on the end of an Alexander-Arnold square ball but could only edge it wide. But he finally got on the scoresheet in the 77th minute when finishing at the near post from a Fabian Delph cross.

Rooney almost got his goal in injury time but Guzan wouldn't allow him his fairy-tale moment.
