Manchester City beat Everton, move to top of table ahead of Liverpool

Manchester City left both Merseyside contingents wanting after the defending Premier League champions beat Everton 2-0 on Wednesday night, moving ahead of Liverpool at the top of the standings on goal difference.

Liverpool could retake first place should they get a result on Saturday against Bournemouth, with City next taking on Chelsea on Sunday.

Wednesday's match at Goodison Park was a re-arranged fixture caused by City's advance to the Carabao Cup final. Aymeric Laporte's header from David Silva's brilliant set-piece in the waning ticks of the first half gave City the lead at the break. The goal was the 17th conceded by Everton from a set-piece in all competitions this season.

City had the lion's share of possession throughout the match, and the Toffees had few chances to test the defence of Pep Guardiola's side. Gabriel Jesus' goal in the 97th minute, assisted by fellow substitute Kevin De Bruyne, sealed the victory and the three points. Although the Brazilian's shot was blocked by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, he reacted quickly to head home the loose ball.

Information from Reuters was used in this report.
