Rapids beat LAFC, extend unbeaten MLS run

Danny Wilson scored from a corner kick four minutes after halftime, and the Colorado Rapids continued their resurgence with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC on Friday night in Commerce City, Colo.

Interim coach Conor Casey saw his team stretch its MLS unbeaten run to seven matches in his ninth game in charge after the May 1 firing of former coach Anthony Hudson.

That's now the longest active stretch without a loss in the Western Conference and second in MLS behind only New York City FC's 10-match run.

After beginning the season 0-7-2 under Hudson, the Rapids (5-9-4, 19 points) moved off the bottom of the West standings for the first time since.

They are now in 10th place out of 12 teams after snapping LAFC's unbeaten run at eight matches.

First-place LAFC (11-2-4, 37 points) was held scoreless for just the third time this season.

Tim Howard made three saves to preserve the third shutout of his final MLS season before retirement, all of the stops coming after lightning delayed play for roughly an hour early in the second half.

After a relatively tame first half, Wilson headed Colorado in front in the 49th minute.

Andre Shinyashiki's shot forced Pablo Sisniega into a diving stop, forcing a corner kick. Jack Price sent in an outswinging service from the right, and Wilson reached it at the back post.

In the 52nd minute, lightning strikes halted play. LAFC's best chance of the evening to that point came shortly after play resumed, when Diego Rossi worked free on the left side of the penalty area and forced Howard into an excellent reaction save.

Rossi was the creator of another excellent chance in the 71st minute, getting down the left flank and spotting Adrien Perez, who struggled to control the cross and poked a half-volley over the crossbar.

Then in the 80th minute, Colorado defender Keegan Rosenberry appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area, but referee David Gantar did not spot the infraction and declined a video review for a potential penalty-kick foul.
