New England Revolution beat Minnesota United to get first win
It's hard to call a game a "must win" in only the fifth week of the MLS season, but the New England Revolution's home game Saturday against Minnesota United was close to being just that.
And the Revolution got what they needed, coming away with a 2-1 win.
New England (1-3-1, 4 points) had yet to put together a complete game through its first four outings, but Saturday the team responded with its best effort of the young season.
Minnesota (2-2-0, 6 points) played its fourth straight game on the road as the team waits for its new stadium to be open.
After a first half where the teams battled to a 1-1 draw, New England came out and had the better run of play in the early going.
It paid off in the 62nd minute when Brandon Bye put one home off what appeared to be an off-target shot from Teal Bunbury. Bunbury took a pass in the left side of the Minnesota penalty box, turned and launched a shot toward the far post.
The ball was going wide, but Bye rushed in and put it home for the 2-1 lead.
In the 10th minute of the game New England struck first when Jalil Anibaba scored a diving header on a cross from Carles Gil. Minnesota goalie Vito Mannone did get a hand on the ball, but it spun off and into the goal for the early lead.
Minnesota drew even in the 26th minute when Darwin Quintero converted a penalty kick that came as a result of a video review of a handball in the area on New England defender Michael Mancienne.
Just a short time later, Minnesota nearly took the lead when Francisco Calvo sent a laser of header at the New England goal, but Revolution goalie Cody Cropper found a way to deflect it off the crossbar and keep the game tied.
