Lewis lifts Colorado to 2-1 win at D.C. United

Substitute Jonathan Lewis scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time and the Colorado Rapids rallied for a season-opening 2-1 victory over D.C. United on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

Lewis, who entered in the 85th minute, completed the comeback that began when Kei Kamara headed in Jack Price's cross in the 67th minute.

The victory snapped Colorado's winless run against D.C. at nine matches, a streak which dated back to 2011.

Russell Canouse's header off Julian Gressel's corner kick put D.C. United in front in the 60th minute after they had the majority of the chances for the opening hour.

Clint Irwin made three saves for the Rapids.

Bill Hamid had five stops for D.C., which lost its first Audi Field season opener in three seasons.

Both Colorado goals resulted from D.C. failing to fully clear previous opportunities.

Kamara leveled the match on the second phase following a corner kick. Frederic Brillant marked Kamara on the play, but the striker simply outmuscled the defender to nod in Price's service from the right flank.

Then in stoppage time, Canouse tried to help D.C. pass the ball out of the back rather than simply clearing it out for a corner. Lewis had a first attempt blocked by a D.C. defender, but eventually reached a loose ball and hammered it into an open goal.

Gressel, who was traded from Atlanta United in January as a result of a salary dispute with his previous team, was at the heart of most good chances for United.

Less than a half-hour in, he appeared to find Edison Flores for the Peruvian's first MLS goal, only for it to be correctly ruled offside. Moments later, Irwin followed with his best stop of the day to deny Felipe in the 29th minute.

In the second half, Gressel accurately allowed for the effects of a breezy afternoon on his corner from the left. It fell perfectly to Canouse alone at the back post, and he nodded it in from about 6 yards out to give D.C. the lead.
