Honors even as San Jose Earthquakes hold Portland Timbers

After brothers Yimmi Chara and Diego Chara teamed up for a Portland Timbers goal, Valeri Qazaishvili equalized late in the second half for the host San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday as the teams played to a 1-1 tie.

Qazaishvili scored his third of the season in the 76th minute as the Earthquakes played to their second consecutive tie after an embarrassing 7-1 defeat to the Seattle Sounders on Sept. 10.

Yimmi Chara's first career MLS goal helped give the Timbers a 1-1-1 mark over the first three games of a four-game road swing.

Wednesday's game was a makeup from a scheduled Aug. 26 contest that both teams elected to not play to raise awareness for social and racial injustice. The teams will meet each other again in San Jose on Saturday.

With Diego Chara, 34, getting an assist, he and Yimmi Chara, 29, became the sixth set of brothers to combine on a goal in MLS history. Yimmi Chara is in his first season with the Timbers.

In the 33rd minute, Diego Chara picked up a loose ball at midfield and sent it toward the Earthquakes goal with the outside of his right foot. Yimmi Charra let the ball pass to decoy Earthquakes defender Paul Marie, caught up to it and lifted a delicate chip with his left foot over charging San Jose goalkeeper James Marcinkowski.

Qazaishvili's goal came off a feed that Chris Wondolowski delivered with his head. Qazaishvili slid around Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark before scoring with his left foot just before the ball was cleared off the goal line. The score had to be verified on video review.

Clark made five saves while Marcinkowski was credited with two saves.

The Timbers were scheduled to fly home and then return to San Jose for the rematch on Saturday.

Portland is 1-3-2 since winning the MLS is Back Tournament last month. The Earthquakes are a disappointing 0-3-3 since advancing to the quarterfinals of MLS is Back.
