FC Cincinnati had three draws and three losses since their most recent win, which came against the Red Bulls in July in the MLS is Back tournament near Orlando. Since then FC Cincinnati had scored just one goal in its past six matches.

The shutout loss was the third in a row at home for the reeling Red Bulls, who had snapped a four-match winless stretch with a 2-0 road win over D.C. United on Wednesday.

Neither team came close to scoring in the first half, with both managing five shots and only one each on target over the first 45 minutes.

FC Cincinnati had a prime scoring chance in the 72nd minute when Brandon Vasquez was given a one-on-one breakaway inside the six-yard box by Yuya Kubo that was kicked away at the last instant by Red Bulls' keeper David Jensen.

Cincinnati had extensive advantages in shots (14-10), shots on target (4-2), passing (482 total passes to 383), and passing accuracy (78 percent to 70 percent) over New York, and controlled the action throughout.

Spencer Richey, making his third start of the year for Cincinnati, recorded two saves to record his first shutout of the season and third clean sheet in his 23-game MLS career.
