Daniel Salloi strikes twice as Sporting Kansas City cruises past Colorado Rapids

Daniel Salloi scored a first-half brace to lead Sporting Kansas City to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night.

Sporting KC improved to 4-0-2 at home in 2021.

The hosts, who had a one-point margin over third-place Colorado, left little doubt in this match. Sporting KC owned possession (56-44 percent), plus an edge in shots (14-9) and shots on target (6-3).

Colorado never mounted much of an attack until it was too late. The Rapids got on the board in the 84th minute following a corner; Keegan Rosenberry redirected a carom past SKC keeper Tim Melia from point-blank range.

Boasting a 2-0 advantage at halftime, Sporting KC eliminated any drama remaining in the 64th minute when Felipe Hernandez scored his first career MLS goal for a 3-0 lead.

The hosts nearly made it a laugher after Hernandez's goal. Alan Pulido hit the outside of the net after eluding Colorado keeper William Yarbrough in the 71st minute. Pulido also hit the post moments later but was ruled offside on the play.

Sporting KC owned the pace from the beginning of the match. Khiry Shelton had a golden opportunity in the seventh minute, when he raced past the Colorado defense unencumbered toward the goal. Shelton touched it a bit too far in front of him, and Yarbrough scooped it up.

Yarbrough was not so fortunate in the 14th minute. Johnny Russell collected a pass from Jaylin Lindsey up the right side just before the touchline. Russell sent it to the middle of the box, where Salloi one-timed it past Yarbrough from the 6-yard box.

Salloi almost had a brace later in the half, but Yarbrough deflected one from short range. In the 38th minute, Hernandez made a deft pass to Salloi just inside the box. Salloi then slipped it past Yarbrough on the skinny side of the net.

Sporting KC will have a quick turnaround, hosting LAFC on Saturday. Colorado is off until July 4, when it hosts Seattle.
