Newcomers the difference as Austin FC beats Galaxy 2-0

Moussa Djitte and McKenzie Gaines II scored second-half goals and Brad Stuver stopped seven shots to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season as Austin FC outplayed the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy in a 2-0 win on Sunday in a Western Conference match.

Austin FC (6-16-4, 22 points) snapped a five-game losing streak but still is in the cellar of the West standings with eight matches to play in the regular season.

Austin got on the board as Djitte sent home the rebound of his own shot in the 64th minute.

Djitte, a Senegalese national who has played in just seven matches for Austin, scored his first-ever goal in the United States in his second start. His first shot was batted down by LA goalkeeper Jonathan Bond but bounced right back to Djitte, who lifted it into the upper-right corner.

Gaines, playing in just his second game with the MLS team, volleyed a pass from Nick Lima off Bond and into the net in the 79th minute, becoming the first player born in Austin to score for the expansion team.

Most of Stuver's work in net was done near the end of the first half when he turned away three point-blank shots. He now has six shutouts in his nine-year MLS career.

The Galaxy (11-10-5, 38 points) lost for the second straight match and is mired in a seven-game winless streak that's seen them lose four times and produce three draws since their last win, on Aug. 14 in Minnesota.

LA is now in fifth place in the West, one point ahead of Minnesota and two up on Real Salt Lake with eight matches to play.

The Galaxy and Austin FC split their two matches this season, with the Galaxy winning 2-0 at home on May 15 in their only previous meeting between the two teams.
