Romania appoint Christoph Daum as new head coach

Romania have appointed German coach Christoph Daum after being eliminated from the European Championship without winning a game.

Daum replaces former Romania legend Anghel Iordanescu, who stepped down from his third stint as coach after his team's exit from Euro 2016.

Romania finished last in a group that included France, Switzerland and Albania.

The 62-year-old Daum won the Bundesliga with Stuttgart in 1992, the Austrian league with Austria Vienna in 2003 and the Turkish league times -- with Besiktas in 1995 and Fenerbahce in 2004 and 2005.

He has not managed since leaving Bursaspor in 2014. Romania will be his first international job.

Daum was widely expected to be appointed Germany coach after the team's disappointing Euro 2000, until he subsequently admitted to cocaine use in the past.
