Lazio striker Stefano Mauri would consider move to MLS

Stefano Mauri could be tempted into a move to Major League Soccer, but is still likely to sign a new contract with Lazio.

Mauri, 35, is out of contract at the end of the month after scoring nine Serie A goals as Lazio finished third and qualified for the Champions League next season.

The striker remains confident of extending his stay with the Biancocelesti, but is also keeping his options open over a move to the United States.

In an interview with Calcio 2000, reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Lazio captain revealed: "My contract is ending, but I really don't think there will be any problems extending it. However, if an interesting offer were to come from the MLS, then I would have to think about it, that's for sure."

So far, no offer has come, so all seems set for a prolonged stay under coach Stefano Pioli's guidance, with whom Mauri immediately established a good relationship.

"He has surprised me. I didn't expect him to be so well prepared, both on a tactical and on a motivational level," Mauri said. "He is very good with young players too, which is a rare gift.

"He has put himself on the spot in a difficult window in Rome, but he has done it so well."
