Felipe Santana mystery hand injury could affect Schalke sale plans

Schalke's hopes of selling Felipe Santana have suffered another setback after it emerged that the defender returned from holidays with a mystery finger injury.

Confusion surrounds the origin of the problem, with the club sounding unsure of the player's explanation and German newspaper Bild suggesting it might be a gunshot wound.

Earlier this month, Santana, 29, failed a medical at Cologne due to a calf tear. On Monday Bild published a photo, reportedly taken on the day of the Brazilian's medical, in which the player's right hand is clearly bandaged.

Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt has now confirmed that Santana had also hurt his finger.

"Supposedly he also did this on holidays -- during weight training," Heldt told kicker.

Santana, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Olympiakos, has not been given a squad number by Schalke for next season.

"We want to part with him -- the player knows that," said Heldt.

Schalke have also agreed to sell Peruvian attacker Jefferson Farfan to Al-Jazira in order to raise the cash they need to buy Inter Milan midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.
