Asier Illarramendi confirms Real Madrid to Real Sociedad transfer

Asier Illarramendi said a return to Real Sociedad from Real Madrid was his "first option" as he moves closer to sealing a transfer back to his first club.

Illarramendi, 25, signed for Los Blancos from Sociedad in 2013 but his future at the club under new coach Rafa Benitez has been the subject of conjecture.

AS reports a deal in the region of €17 million, plus add-ons, has been agreed between the two sides to secure his return to San Sebastian.

Illarramendi said: "Very happy. Of course, I wanted to return, I haven't yet spoken to my teammates, later I will speak with them. Real [Sociedad] has always been my first option and I was really wanting to return home, of course."

The deal is expected to go through on Wednesday, after he undergoes a medical, with Illarramendi in contention to be presented in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, Sociedad's Markel Bergara and Inigo Martinez said they would be delighted if former teammate Illarramendi returns to the Basque club from Real Madrid.
