Nicklas Bendtner has Wolfsburg contract 'mutually terminated'

Wolfsburg have released former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner from his contract, the club confirmed on Monday.

Bendtner, 28, had already been excluded from training after the club said they felt he posed a "threat" to team spirit.

On Monday, Wolfsburg said on their official website that "attacker Nicklas Bendtner is no longer a VfL Wolfsburg player" and added that there had been a "mutually agreed contract termination."

Sporting executive Klaus Allofs said: "Both Nicklas and ourselves had high hopes of his engagement at VfL Wolfsburg, but after two years we have had to ascertain that those expectations were fulfilled neither for him nor for us.

"Continued cooperation made no sense for either side. For that reason, the mutual decision to end our association prematurely is thus the best solution for all parties.

"We wish Nicklas all the very best for his future career."

Bendtner had a year left on his deal at Wolfsburg, whom he joined in the summer of 2014.

He scored nine goals in 47 matches in all competitions, but increasingly made headlines for his behaviour off the pitch.

The Dane was fined for posting a picture showing him getting into a Mercedes car -- a German car manufacturing rival of Volkswagen, Wolfsburg's owners -- on Instagram, and also for arriving 50 minutes late for a training session.

Bendtner had also been asked to put in extra training sessions during the club's winter camp.
