Manchester City interested in signing Geronimo Rulli, goalkeeper claims

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Deportivo Maldonado goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, according to the player.

Rulli, 24, who is preparing for the Olympics with Argentina, has spent the past two seasons on loan at La Liga side Real Sociedad from Uruguayan club Deportivo.

But the keeper says City are trying to negotiate a deal to sign him, which is complicated as Rulli is owned by a third-party South American investment fund.

"Manchester City have shown interest in me again. My agents are looking after this, I just try and focus on the Olympics," he is quoted by Marca as telling Argentine radio station InfoPincha.

"Then it will be whatever God wants. My wish now is to play in the Olympics and then we'll see what happens."

City have been rumoured to be interested in a new goalkeeper all summer and were heavily linked with a move for Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Current No. 1 Joe Hart will return to the Etihad Stadium on the back of a disastrous Euro 2016, where he made two major errors as England were eliminated in the round of 16.

Reports in Spain, however, claim that Rulli could be loaned back to Sociedad for a third season.

"There is also the possibility that Manchester City buy me, that is what needs to be sorted out now among the teams," Rulli added. "We will see what happens. I hope what happens is good for me and the club.

"I am relaxed, have begun to train for the Olympics, and will let my people sort this out in the end. The truth is I still do not know what will happen. It is close to being sorted, but I cannot tell you how."

It was reported in Spain that new City boss Pep Guardiola had spoken to Rulli, but the keeper refused to comment on those claims.

"These are private things you do not talk about," he said. "My idea is always just to play in the Olympics and everyone understood that."

Rulli has been called up to the Argentina squad on four occasions, although he has yet to make his senior debut for the national team.
