Re-signing Miroslav Klose like 'hitting the jackpot' - Kaiserslautern chief

Kaiserslautern chairman Thomas Gries has launched a bid to re-sign Miroslav Klose, saying he would be stupid not to try.

Germany's all-time leading goal scorer is a free agent having left Lazio and a return to the club where he launched his career could be an appealing option.

Gries says the Red Devils, who currently play in Germany's second tier, will pull out all the stops to sign him, and hope nostalgia will do the rest.

"It would be absolutely stupid of me if I didn't at least try," Gries told SWR television. "It would be like hitting the jackpot for Kaiserslautern. We have got to give it a try."

Klose, 38, has been linked with several clubs since leaving Rome, but it is unclear whether he would be interested in ending his career in the second tier of German football.

He scored 55 goals in Serie A for Lazio having found the back of the net 121 times in the Bundesliga for Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich. Kaiserslautern gave him his big break in 2000 and he went on to score a national record 71 times for his country.
