Bafetimbi Gomis says he took wage cut to join Marseille from Swansea

Bafetimbi Gomis has suggested that he took a wage cut to make sure that his move from Swansea to Marseille went through.

Gomis, 30, sealed a return to Ligue 1 last week after agreeing to a season-long loan deal at Marseille.

The ex-Lyon striker spent two seasons in Wales and said he only wanted to leave Swansea for one club.

"I made my directors understand that I only wanted to go to Marseille," he told La Provence.

"English clubs and other more exotic ones came forward. I always used my veto. When I saw that things weren't progressing, I made an effort.

"I also wanted to show that it wasn't just a financial story and that I really wanted to return to the fold and take up this challenge."

Gomis made 18 starts in the Premier League in each of the past two seasons but the former France international was used as a substitute almost as often.

Despite not getting as much game time as he would have liked, he said he enjoyed his time at Swansea, with whom he hit 13 league goals.

"From now on I'll be defending the colours of OM," he said.

"I hope to write a beautiful story with this club. At Swansea I also experienced some good times -- it was a great adventure. I discovered a new culture and met extraordinary people.

"On a sporting level it didn't work out for various reasons but I kept my head up and stayed professional until the end. Sometimes you learn a lot through difficult seasons. I'm counting on showing everything I learned over there."
