Joleon Lescott signs for Sunderland until the end of the season

Sunderland have signed former England international Joleon Lescott on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Lescott, 34, a two-time Premier League winner with Manchester City, had been a free agent since departing AEK Athens in November after less than three months at the club.

The Blacks Cats, however, have opted to sign the defender, who reunites with manager David Moyes, having played under him at Everton.

"Joleon Lescott has joined Sunderland AFC on a short-term contract," a Sunderland statement read.

"The defender has put pen to paper on a deal with the Black Cats until the end of the season. He will wear the shirt number 15."

Lescott, who won 26 caps for England between 2007 and 2013, has also played for West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Wolves.

Sunderland look set to sell Patrick van Aanholt to Crystal Palace, with sources close to both clubs telling ESPN FC that the Eagles are closing in on a move for the defender.
