Everton want Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt - sources

Everton are lining up a January move for Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt, sources close to the Merseyside club have told ESPN FC.

New Everton boss Sam Allardyce has worked with Van Aanholt at both Sunderland and Palace.

The left-back helped both clubs secure Premier League survival under Allardyce, and sources said the pair enjoy working together.

Everton have suffered injury problems to first-choice left-back Leighton Baines, with Cuco Martina filling the role since Allardyce's arrival at Goodison Park.

Everton have conceded 29 goals in 16 league games this season, and Allardyce is keen to strengthen his defensive options.

Van Aanholt has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Palace starting XI since Roy Hodgson took over and could be interested in a move in search of regular football.

Although Palace would be reluctant to lose him as they battle relegation, they could cash in if that allows Hodgson to strengthen the squad in other areas.
