Atlanta United has transferred midfielder Carlos Carmona to Chilean side Colo Colo, the MLS club revealed on Thursday, telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the deal was done with a "heavy heart."
Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra told the AJC that the Five Stripes were reluctant to sell the player, but that the deal was made so that Carmona could be with his wife, who is experiencing complications due to her pregnancy, and is unable to travel.
"We wouldn't be doing the right thing standing in [Carmona's] way," Bocanegra told the AJC.
The deal sees Carmona return to his native Chile, where he started his professional career with hometown club Coquimbo Unido before moving to O'Higgins in 2008.
He has spent the bulk of his professional career in Italy's Serie A, first with Reggina and later Atalanta, where he spent seven seasons.
During Carmona's single campaign with Atlanta United, he made 32 league and playoff appearances, recording two goals and two assists.
At international level, Carmona has made 50 appearances for Chile, scoring one goal.
