Roma have held talks with Manchester United about the possibility of singing forward Alexis Sanchez on loan next season, according to the Telegraph.
Sanchez's role at United remains unclear despite the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan this week. Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seemingly pledged to play with Anthony Martial as the leading striker after handing him the No. 9 shirt, but the Norwegian boss has also said he expected Sanchez to stay at United this season.
It is not yet clear whether Sanchez would be open to the move, but any loan arrangement would involve United having to subsidise some of the nearly £400,000-a-week wages.
Sanchez was one of the last players to return to training after an extended holiday, and he played only 63 minutes in preseason, against Blackburn Rovers' U23s.

20:00 BST: More Serie A chatter, as Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri is being coy on the future of Paulo Dybala, who was linked to Manchester United and Spurs before the Premier League deadline closed.
Asked about Dybala's future following his side's 2-1 preseason loss to Atletico Madrid, Sarri said: "I can talk about Paulo all I like, but the market goes in a certain way and then whatever I say counts for nothing."
Dybala has been more recently linked to a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
19:45 BST: Napoli are also trying to get Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan, explains AS. Citing a Calciomercato report, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has met with Wanda Nara (Icardi's representative and wife) to get the Argentine on a yearly salary of €10 million.
18.45 BST: Everton and Crystal Palace were hot on the trail for Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson but neither side were able to close the deal ahead of the Premier League deadline. Now it seems Milan and Napoli are both vying for the Frenchman, according to le10sport.
And what will be the price for the Serie A rivals to land Sanson? Only a cool €35 million.
17.14 BST: Gareth Bale is the only one who will suffer if he insists on staying at Real Madrid, the club's former sporting director Predrag Mijatovic has said.
Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has publicly states that Los Blancos are working to get the Wales international moved on, but a proposed move to Chinese Super League Jiangsu Suning fell through.
Speaking to Spanish radio show "El Larguero," former Madrid player and club chief Mijatovic said: "If Bale stays in Madrid, Real Madrid is not going to have problems.
"Bale will be the one that will have problems. Zidane has zero or little faith in him."
16.28 BST: Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has no doubt Donny van de Beek is good enough to improve Real Madrid but joked he would prefer his ex-teammate to stay at Ajax.
Van de Beek, 22, has confirmed Madrid are in talks with Ajax as they look to bolster their midfield before the transfer window closes.
De Jong played alongside Van de Beek last season as the Dutch club won a domestic double and upset Madrid and Juventus on their way to a Champions League semifinal, where they were eventually beaten by Tottenham Hostpur.
"I would prefer him to stay at Ajax because I wouldn't have him as an opponent and Ajax would stay strong," De Jong told ESPN FC when asked if he would like to see Van de Beek join Barca's Clasico rivals.
"But, no, of course, when it's all settled, and if he moves to Madrid, I am really happy for him. I think he deserves it. He's a great player. Then I will go see him in Spain!"
15.53 BST: Liverpool are considering offering veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan a short-term contract to provide cover following Alisson's injury, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Alisson will miss next week's UEFA Super Cup match against Chelsea after suffering a right calf injury in Friday's Premier League season opening win over Norwich City.
The Brazil international came off in the 39th minute of the match after slipping and holding his calf. He waived off the stretcher but needed assistance from the team's trainers to come off the pitch at Anfield.
The Liverpool Echo reports that Lonergan, 35, has impressed ever since joining Liverpool on their preseason tour of the U.S., during which he played the first half against Sevilla in Boston.
The former Preston, Leeds and Bolton keeper is a free agent, having left Middlesbrough at the end of last season, and could therefore come into Liverpool's squad despite the Premier League deadline passing two days ago.
15.16 BST: After a summer attempting to engineer ended in failure, Wilfried Zaha has been named on the bench for Crystal Palace's Premier League season opener against Everton.
Zaha had been hopeful of joining first Arsenal and then Everton, only for both deals to fall apart as Palace would not budge on their £80m valuation of the Ivory Coast forward.
Palace manager Roy Hodgson told Sky in the hours before Thursday's Premier League transfer deadline: "Everyone here has a good relationship with him. There's not a problem with that. His beef is with the chairman and owners of the club because he's wanted to leave and they haven't received the offer that they think is sufficient to allow him to leave. He has to come to terms with that, when you sign long-term contracts you are expected to honour them and we expect him to do that."
However, now that the issue has affected Zaha's place in the team, will he make a renewed bid to leave Selhurst Park in January?
14.51 BST: Manchester United have ended the summer transfer window short in midfield, the club's record appearance-maker Ryan Giggs has told ESPN FC.
United failed to add any midfielders, despite Marouane Fellaini having left in January and Ander Herrera joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, although the Old Trafford club have so far kept hold of Paul Pogba despite the France international having said publicly that he wants a "new challenge," and sources have told ESPN FC he is unlikely leave before the European deadline on Sept. 2.
"I think we need a couple more midfielders," Giggs said. "If Paul Pogba goes -- we talk about culture change -- but obviously you need quality. You might not like it but come Sunday if Paul Pogba isn't in that midfield or the week after, and we've got the midfielders that we've got at our club, then we're short. That's the problem."
14.17 BST: Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has confirmed Neymar will not feature against Nimes in Sunday's Ligue 1 opening fixture at Parc des Princes as discussions continue over the Brazil international's future.
Neymar, 27, arrived one week late for preseason training and has not played in any warm-up games. Sources have told ESPN FC that the Brazil striker has been linked with a return to Barcelona and has also attracted interest from Real Madrid.
"Honestly, it is not just that (transfer rumours)," Leonardo said. "We are in discussions and we will see what happens. Until a decision is made, we will manage the situation.
"Talks exist. However, Neymar is also not physically ready for the match either. As long as we are in talks -- today they exist, while they did not before. It is important for everybody that the future is defined. The team must be focused on the game.
"Discussions are more advanced than before, but that does not mean that there is an agreement. What needs to be defined is if he stays and plays or goes."
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel added he and Neymar and have not discussed the €222 million man's future but that he picked up knocks in training ahead of the match.
"I have not spoken with Neymar," said the German. "I am the coach. I speak with him about training.
"He is still a little injured and took knocks on Friday, as well as Saturday. Neymar did not complete a full week of training with the squad, so he cannot play against Nimes."

12.45 BST: Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic has not been called up for the squad's preseason match against Valencia on Saturday amid talks over a proposed move to Bayern Munich, according to a Sky Italia reporter.
Bayern are reportedly in talks over a loan move with an option to buy for the Croatia international, with the German side looking to replace Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben who both left the club this summer.

"I spoke with him when we started preseason and I spoke with him also two weeks ago saying maybe there was the possibility he can leave," Emery said.
"But I don't have doubts if he needs to play because he is a good player.

10.41 BST: Juventus striker Paulo Dybala's future in Turin rests on the movement PSG's Neymar, with the French side one of few teams with the capacity to sign the Agentine forward, Gazzetta dello Sport have reported.
The Italian news outlet reported that Dybala was included in the traveling squad for Juve's preseason game against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
Dybala had a proposed move to Tottenham lined up on Thursday but it fell through after the player and his representatives failed to agree terms with the Premier League club.

That means stars who have been linked with moves to the continent, such as Spurs midfielder and Real Madrid target Christian Eriksen, could still be unsettled by offers.
"Sometimes it's going to be difficult‚" Pochettino told a news conference before Saturday's game against Aston Villa. "Any club from Europe can create a big problem. They have many different objectives, different challenges and different thoughts. That is why it surprised me when they decided to close the window in England earlier. It gives Europe the opportunity to create problems here and I think it's not common sense."

Another day, another rumour involving Paulo Dybala. This time, French champions Paris Saint-Germain are rumoured to be offering the wantaway Argentine a whopping £11 million-a-season contract after the forward walked away from moves to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur before the Premier League transfer window slammed shut this week.
The Mail is reporting that PSG's sporting director Leonardo has called Dybala to offer him a five-year deal and become Neymar's heir, with the Brazilian widely expected to leave Paris.
It has been reported Juve would sell Dybala for around £80m, although they are struggling to find a replacement after failing to land Lukaku, who joined Inter Milan on Thursday.
The Italian transfer window closes on Aug. 18, the French market Aug. 31.
James to stay in Madrid ... with Atletico
Atletico Madrid are confident they can land Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez, reports Marca.
With the Premier League transfer window now shut, Diego Simeone is quietly hoping his employers can add the last piece of the jigsaw after a successful summer recruitment drive. Madrid had been hoping to use James as part of a deal to land reinforcements to enhance their own squad, principally Paul Pogba from Manchester United, but Los Blancos may now be prepared to sell to their city rivals in an effort to offload a player who has no future at the Bernabeu.
Real are reluctant to sell to Atletico and strengthen their rivals, but with no English club to sell to and Napoli unwilling to meet the €50m fee, it leaves them with few options.
Atletico beat Madrid 7-3 in preseason, and Simeone will be looking to get another one over on his nearest rivals by signing James before the season gets underway.
