Orlando Pirates moved up to second in the Premier Soccer League standings following a 1-0 win against Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday evening.

The Buccaneers endured their worst-ever campaign last season, but have started life under Milutin Sredojevic much improved. They moved up to second following the win against a struggling Urban Warriors side, with Ghanaian forward Bernard Morrison getting the only goal.

That leaves Pirates level on points with surprise-package Maritzburg United, who remain unbeaten in the league under Fadlu Davids after a 1-1 draw at AmaZulu. The visitors opened the scoring late on when Michael Morton put the ball past his own keeper, but Usuthu rescued a point with two minutes remaining through a Mhlengi Cele header.

SuperSport United moved up to fifth place with a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars, who remain pointless and rooted to the foot of the table. Dikwena, who this week appointed Roger de Sa as their new coach, fought bravely against a star-studded Matsatsantsa, but the class eventually shown through as two late goals from Sifiso Myeni and Jeremy Brockie secured the points.

Elsewhere, Ndumiso Mabena scored a brace as Bloemfontein Celtic beat Polokwane City 2-1 for a first win of the season, while Gift Motupa also got two as Baroka FC stunned Chippa United 3-1 in Port Elizabeth.
