Reims' Antoine Conte arrested following baseball bat attack - report

French Ligue 2 club Reims have condemned the actions of defender Antoine Conte after he was reportedly arrested for attacking a teenager with a baseball bat and leaving him in a critical condition.

According to radio network Europe 1, Conte was taken into custody on Thursday after turning on a passer-by who was trying to stop him from attacking his girlfriend outside the footballer's home.

The 19-year-old is reported to be in hospital with a serious head injury.

"Reims are shocked to note the acts of unspeakable violence of which Antoine Conte has been accused,'' Reims said in a statement released on Friday morning.

"Reims, whose thoughts go to the girlfriend of the player and the seriously injured young individual, condemn in the strongest sense these acts, which go profoundly against the club's values.

"Without delay, Reims demand that the player responds to these acts, and reserves the nature of the punishments, which will be exemplary if the facts are proven, to the parts of the investigation currently led by the competent authorities."

The 22-year-old Conte began his professional career with Paris Saint-Germain and represented France from under-17 level through to the under-21s.

He initially joined Reims on loan in 2013 before signing a permanent deal the following year.
