Roberto Martinez: No Man United approach for Seamus Coleman

LIVERPOOL -- Everton manager Roberto Martinez has dismissed suggestions that full-back Seamus Coleman is set for a move to Manchester United.

Newspaper reports over the weekend claimed that United and Chelsea are both interested in signing the Republic of Ireland international for 25 million pounds.

Coleman, who joined from Irish club Sligo Rovers for 60,000 pounds in January 2009, signed a contract extension in June that committed him to Everton until 2019 and Martinez plans to keep him at the club for a long time to come.

Asked if there been any contact with Manchester United over the 26-year-old, the manager said: "Not at all, no."

On the reports of Coleman moving on, Martinez said: "For me, it's nothing to comment on. I haven't seen that. I've no recollection of that.

"As you can imagine, what we want at the club is to build something to make us stronger, and the last thing we want is to lose important players."

Coleman had a bruising afternoon as Everton were beaten 3-2 at Newcastle on Sunday, the club's fifth defeat in seven Premier League games.

The defender was on the receiving end of an elbow by Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse, who has since been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after referee Craig Pawson missed the incident.

Martinez says he has received no apology from Pawson -- in contrast to the example set by fellow referee Anthony Taylor, who has said sorry to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho after wrongly booking midfielder Cesc Fabregas for diving during their 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday.

The Everton manager feels his side have had a rough deal from referees in recent weeks.

He thought Andre Marriner should have sent off Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala for a studs-up challenge on Samuel Eto'o at the Etihad Stadium on Dec. 6, and also believed that the referee was wrong to book Ross Barkley for diving in the same game.

Lee Mason caused Martinez further frustration by only showing Stoke midfielder Jon Walters a yellow card for an alleged professional foul on Leighton Baines on Boxing Day.

Martinez said: "I don't think I've got enough time to get all the apologies coming our way.

"I think it's very brave of Anthony Taylor to come out and take responsibility. We all know how difficult the job is for referees, who have to make a decision in a split second.

"I always like to allow the referees to do their job and to be in a good frame of mind to make good decisions.

"We've been on the wrong end of many bad calls recently, but I always hope that over the course of the season, that will level up.

"We've only got 19 games left for that to happen, though, and we'll probably need more than that."

Martinez is facing a host of injury worries ahead of the New Year's Day Premier League trip to Hull.

Defenders Phil Jagielka and John Stones are struggling with the ankle injuries -- both suffered against Stoke -- that forced them to miss the defeat at Newcastle.

Stones' injury is of particular concern, as the 20-year-old has only recently returned from ankle surgery after suffering ligament damage during a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on Oct. 5.

Leon Osman is facing a long-term absence with a foot injury, while fellow midfielders Darron Gibson (knee), Steven Pienaar (knee) are definitely out, and James McCarthy (hamstring) is doubtful.

The manager said: "Phil has a twisted ankle, while John got a strong knock on the ankle he had an operation on earlier this season. We'll have to assess it on a daily basis. It's really difficult to predict how long they're going to be out for.

"We've got a real worry about Leon Osman, who has a split tendon in his foot, which he picked up when he got a knock against West Ham. We tried to get through it, but we need to find a solution now, so he's going to be out for a while.

"Darron Gibson is still coming back from his knee soreness. He'll be out for Thursday's game.

"Steven Pienaar is a couple of weeks away from getting fully match-fit after his knee trouble.

"James McCarthy will be assessed for Thursday. At the moment, it's too early to say. In the Newcastle game, he couldn't continue. It was more of a precaution than an injury, but we need to be careful that he gets back to being fully fit before he's facing the demands of a full 90 minutes."
