Atletico Madrid's Toby Alderweireld has Tottenham medical - sources

Tottenham are close to finalising a move for Toby Alderweireld after the player arrived in London for talks and a medical, sources have told ESPN FC.

Spurs were always confident of signing Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid despite threats of legal action from the 26-year-old's former loan club Southampton that may have scuppered the deal, as revealed by ESPN FC on Monday.

Reports suggested Southampton were considering legal action against Atletico should the Spanish club sell Alderweireld to any other club.

Atletico allegedly missed a deadline to cancel a buyout in the deal that saw Southampton sign the Belgian defender last summer, with Saints boss Ronald Koeman confirming on Monday that the reports were correct.

Despite the issues between Southampton and Atletico, Tottenham have pushed on in their pursuit of Alderweireld sources have told ESPN FC that they have agreed a fee of £10 million which could rise to £11.5m with Atletico for the defender.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is believed to have travelled to Spain at the weekend to finalise the deal and it appears Spurs have got their man.

Alderweireld is thought to have made White Hart Lane his preferred destination ahead of Southampton, where he will link up with fellow Belgians Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli in North London.

Alderweireld is set to complete the formalities of the move on Tuesday and he is expected to sign a five-year deal with Spurs.

The former Ajax man wil become Tottenham's third defensive signing of the summer following the arrivals of Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier from Cologne and Burnley respectively.

Asked what the situation with Alderweireld was, Koeman said on Monday: "What came out in the press. Southampton signed the option for the player and Atletico Madrid is trying to buy back the option.

"In our knowledge it is and was too late. What happened with Tottenham in the middle I don't know. Seriously, I don't know."
