Wojciech Szczesny aims to take Roma to next level

Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is looking forward to working under another French coach after enjoying nine unforgettable years with Arsene Wenger.

The Polish goalkeeper has joined Roma on loan for a season from Arsenal, although his stay in the Eternal City could be extended. For that to happen, he has to convince Rudi Garcia, Roma's French coach who he expects will take him onto the next level this season.

"I spent nine years with Wenger and it was a fantastic experience for me," Szczesny told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I loved every minute of it. Now I can't wait to learn from Garcia. I'm sure I will gain a lot from him too."

Szczesny seems set to be named Roma's No. 1 goalkeeper this season, taking the place of Morgan De Sanctis as he has done in the Serie A club's last two warm-up matches against Barcelona and Valencia.

"I don't know this yet," said the 25-year-old. "Certainly I've got to work hard to earn my place in the team. I need to grow and to carry on the way I am going, in games and in training, to give the coach an easy decision to make."

He nevertheless did not move to Rome only to sit on the bench, nor did he move to the Serie A club to watch Juventus continue their domination of Italian football and run away with the title again.

"This team's got great potential and that's the reason why I chose to come here," he said. "I wouldn't have come otherwise. I love the fact that everybody really wants to improve here at Roma. I've noticed that we have the right attitude to win trophies."

Not only do the Giallorossi have the right attitude, they now also have the right players, according to the custodian who has welcomed the recent arrivals of Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko.

"Roma have ambitions to win the Scudetto," he said. "And to win the Scudetto, you need to have a world class centre forward, one who is capable of scoring 20 goals a season, maybe even more.

"I think Edin can do that. Let's hope that, thanks to him, we can realise our ambitions."
