Crystal Palace in talks with Sunderland over Patrick van Aanholt - sources

Crystal Palace are closing in on the signing of Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt, sources close to both clubs have told ESPN FC.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce has made a new left-back one of his top priorities during this month's transfer window as he looks to fill the void left by Pape Souare's long-term injury.

Allardyce has been frustrated in his moves for some of his top targets, but sources have told ESPN FC he is making good progress in the hunt for the former Chelsea man, who played for the former England manager during his time at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland are reluctant to lose the 26-year-old, especially to a relegation rival, but David Moyes accepts he needs to cash in on some of his top players if he to raise funds for his own signings this month.

Sources have said the two clubs are locked in talks over a possible deal for Van Aanholt, with Palace ready to pay a fee in the region of £12 millon for the Dutchman.

Sunderland are actively looking for a replacement for Van Aanholt, with the player keen to link up again with Allardyce at Palace.
