It's not so much a case of teaching an old dog new tricks but Roy O'Donovan admits he's thriving under the tutelage of Brisbane Roar coach Robbie Fowler. The Irish veteran notched his fifth goal of the A-League season on Saturday as the Roar claimed a 2-0 win over Central Coast at Suncorp Stadium. The 34-year-old's goalscoring qualities were well known before he joined the Roar after successful stints with the Mariners and Newcastle. But even he admits having a man with 163 English Premier League goals to his name as his coach is enhancing his forward craft. "He sharpens my senses," O'Donovan told Fox Sports about Fowler's impact. "He keeps me on my toes. He takes me out of my comfort zone." Another Roar forward seemingly heeding the lessons of Fowler's know-how is youngster Dylan Wenzel-Halls. Relegated to bit-part roles off the bench for most of the season after his pre-season was hampered by injury, the 21-year-old was given his first start of 2019-20 against the Mariners. He didn't disappoint, providing a direct threat on the right side of the Roar's forward line which included an assist for O'Donovan's opener. It was a display which didn't go unnoticed by Fowler. "Having an injury sort of knocked him back a good few weeks and all of a sudden it was him playing catch-up, trying to catch-up his fitness and his football," the Liverpool legend said. "His attitude's been good and that's all you can ask for as a manager. "Dylan was exciting. Probably a little bit more lively than what we've had in the past games. They've warranted and deserved a chance and they've took it."
