Mile Sterjovski to replace Dwight Yorke as Macarthur FC head coach

Macarthur FC has appointed former Australia international Mile Sterjovski as its permanent coaching replacement for Dwight Yorke.

Manchester United legend Yorke sensationally parted ways with the Bulls on Sunday afternoon, with reports indicating that he and the club's brass agreed to a mutual termination of his contract after he delivered a withering locker room diatribe slamming both the club and broader A-League MenĀ competition following the side's 1-0 loss to Adelaide United the previous evening.

It is understood that Sterjovski, 43, met with the Macarthur squad today and is seen as a long-term solution at the helm of the group by the club's hierarchy, hence the bypassing of an interim title.

A member of the club's staff since its inception as both an assistant to inaugural boss Ante Milicic and the head coach of the team's academy side, the 43-time Socceroo is also seen as being able to get the bests out of the existing Bulls playing group -- continuity being emphasised given the rapid evolution of Yorke's departure.

Sources told ESPN that Sterjovski was initially the preferred candidate to replace Milicic when he informed the Bulls' hierarchy that he intended to step away after two seasons during the 2021-22 season but, at the time, he turned down the opportunity to gain more experience with the youth side.

Yorke's sudden departure, however, has opened the door for the club once more, with the former ALM champion with Central Coast now accepting the call.

A statement released by Macarthur on Sunday said that Yorke and the club had "mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately," in order to allow the 51-year-old to "pursue other opportunities."

Yorke won Macarthur's first piece of silverware, the 2022 Australia Cup, during his brief stint in Sydney's southwest.

"I would like to thank Dwight Yorke and his assistant Russell Latapy for their contribution towards our club and, in particular, Dwight leading Macarthur to our first silverware with our 2022 Australia Cup triumph," Macarthur chairman Gino Marra said in the statement.
