Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy a doubt for Champions League tie against Chelsea

Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy is a serious doubt for his side's Champions League quarterfinal tie against Chelsea due to a leg injury.

Mendy had been sidelined with a muscular problem for almost two months before returning as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat at Barcelona in the league Clasico before the international break. However, a left calf injury now means he is set for another spell on the sidelines.

Madrid said in a statement that Mendy' recovery "will be monitored" although reports in Spain claim the left-back could be out of action for several weeks.

Los Blancos have a challenging schedule ahead with nine games in April.

After Sunday's league game against Real Valladolid, Carlo Ancelotti's side visits Barcelona on April 5 needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the Copa del Rey semifinal second leg.

Madrid then host Chelsea on April 12 in the Champions League quarterfinal opener before travelling to Stamford Bridge for the return leg a week later.
