Germany's Aleksandar Pavlovic to miss Euro 2024 with tonsilitis

Germany midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has been ruled out of Euro 2024 with a renewed bout of tonsillitis and will be replaced in the squad by Emre Can.

Tonsillitis had forced Pavlovic to pull out of Germany's friendlies against France and Netherlands in March, in what was his first call up to the national side.

The 19-year-old, who had been named in Germany's Euros squad on the back of his performances for Bayern Munich this season, made his international debut in the friendly against Ukraine earlier this month.

The Deutscher Fussball-Bund (DFB) confirmed that he will be replaced by Borussia Dortmund captain Can, who is expected to arrive at the team base camp in Herzogenaurach later on Wednesday.

Can was a key figure in Dortmund's run to the Champions League final and has been capped 43 times by Germany.

"We want another No.6 in the squad and have therefore decided to nominate Emre Can. He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team," Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said in a statement.

"We wanted to have another player in the squad who has played a lot of games and who knows how to deal with the pressure. He can well fulfill the profile that we need now."

Germany's Euros campaign begins against Scotland on Friday, with forwards Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala expected to lead the attack for the hosts.

The two have shown signs of a blossoming partnership in Germany's recent friendlies and Wirtz has spoken of the prospect of partnering up with Musiala at a club level.

"I think we both feel comfortable at our clubs at the moment, but we joke from time to time that we think it would be cool to play together at a club at some point," Wirtz said in a news conference on Tuesday.

"I would definitely be happy to spend more time with Jamal."

Wirtz grabbed 38 goals and assists this season as Leverkusen won a domestic double.

"Jamal is already playing for Bayern. I still feel comfortable in Leverkusen," he said when asked on whether he could play alongside Musiala at Bayern or Real Madrid.
